Find That Water Leak Before the Damage Is Done!

September 22, 2022

Even a small water leak in your home can lead to serious damage to walls, ceilings, drywall, hardwood floors, carpeting, and structural wood. Water leaks can also lead to mold and mildew growth which can cause health issues.

Signs You Have a Water Leak

Spotting a water leak is easy when it's a faucet that's dripping, but it's not always so obvious. Some signs that you have a water leak that needs to be addressed include:

  • Higher Water Bills. Increased water usage without explanation and higher utility bills are a sure sign there's an undetected water leak.
  • Running Water Sound. You can hear water running, but the faucets aren't on in the kitchen or bathroom and no showers are running.
  • Water Stains. A leak inside a wall or in the ceiling can usually be spotted by the discoloration it causes on the drywall or other surface.
  • Wet or Damp Floors. If you step in a puddle of water that can't be explained by a spill, pet accident, or similar, it may be a water leak.
  • Musty Odors. Mold and mildew love places with high humidity and water leaks create the perfect environment for them to thrive.
  • Overgrown Lawn. If you have an unusually lush, overgrown area in your grass, it may be because it's getting extra water and nutrients from a water leak.

How to Prevent Water Leaks

Unfortunately, you can't always predict when or if a water leak will happen in your home. You can, however, take action to prevent the majority of water leaks from happening including:

  • Test the Water Pressure. Water pressure should be 40-60 PSI to avoid water leaks.
  • Check Connections. Tighten connections of hoses for the washing machine, refrigerator, etc.
  • Install New Fixtures. Over time, the parts of your kitchen and bathroom fixtures wear out and fail.
