September 15, 2022

If your kitchen sink drain is running slow or the water's not going down at all, there's likely a clog in the drain. It's a frustrating situation that can lead to you needing to call a plumbing professional. The most common causes of kitchen sink clogs are listed here along with ways you can remedy a blocked drain.

Common Causes of a Clogged Kitchen Sink

Although the drain in your kitchen sink has fairly good-sized openings, it's only meant to let water flow through. Anytime you introduce foreign items to the sink, it could clog. The most common causes of kitchen sink clogs include:

  • Grease and oil
  • Food particles
  • Stickers and paper labels
  • Small objects
  • Hair

Tips for Unclogging Your Kitchen Sink

Clearing a clogged drain can be tricky, especially if you're not sure what is causing the clog. However, there are a few things you can do to get the water flowing again including:

  • Use a Plunger. A small, cup shaped plunger is the fastest way to unclog a kitchen sink. Make sure there's water in the sink and plunge until the drain clears.
  • DIY Drain Cleaner.  A simple, non-toxic method of clearing a kitchen drain clog is to pour 1 cup of baking soda followed by a cup of white vinegar down the drain then hot water.
  • Boiling Water. If neither of the above methods unclogged your kitchen drain, try boiling a pot of water. Carefully and slowly pour the water down the drain to dislodge and break up the clog.
