Why Is My Shower Head Dripping?

November 22, 2022

A dripping shower head is a common problem that could result in more issues in your bathroom. You often find this fixture dripping because the washers are damaged or defective, worn out threads, or there is too much build-up of mineral deposits. Whatever the reason, it's important to fix a dripping shower head as soon as possible.

Causes of a Leaking Shower Head

A leaking shower head may not seem like a big deal, but it can waste a lot of water and money. So, what causes this essential component to leak?

  • Broken Washer: The washer is the rubber seal that helps to create a watertight connection between the shower head and the pipe. Over time, this seal can become worn out or damaged, causing water to leak.
  • Clogged Aerator: The aerator is the small screen at the end of the spout. Its purpose is to regulate the water flow. However, if the aerator becomes clogged, it can cause water to start dripping out.
  • Corroded Pipes: As the shower head ages, corrosion can build up on metal pipes, eventually causing holes and leaks.

DIY Tips to Fix a Leaking Shower Head

A leaky shower head is usually a quick and easy problem to fix. Here are some DIY tips:

  1. Turn off the water. This is the first and most important step. Otherwise, you risk getting soaked!
  2. Remove and inspect the shower head. Use a wrench to remove the shower head from the pipe. Once it is removed, look at the water heater and the O-ring (the rubber washer). If it is damaged or worn, that is likely the cause of the leak.
  3. Clean the shower head. Over time, mineral deposits can build up causing a leak. To clean it, soak the shower head in vinegar overnight and then brush away any deposits with an old toothbrush.
  4. Tape up the shower head. If you don't have time to clean or replace the O-ring, you can temporarily stop the leak by wrapping the hose and connection with Teflon tape.
  5. Reattach the shower head. Once you have replaced or cleaned the O-ring, screw the shower head back into place.
  6. Turn on the water. Test for leaks by turning on the water and checking for any drips. Also, you can turn off the shower and check for drips. If all is well, enjoy your non-leaky shower!

When to Call a Professional

Leaks are one of the most common problems with showers, and they can often be easily fixed with a little bit of elbow grease. However, there are some instances when calling in a professional is best.

  • If your shower head is leaking around the handle, you can rely on a plumbing technician to accurately replace the O-ring.
  • If your shower head is leaking from the wall, this could signify a bigger problem and warrants an inspection.
  • If there is leakage and you can't detect the water leak, a professional plumbing technician will know where to look.
