What Is a Yoke Vent in Plumbing?

April 5, 2023

Every industry has its own equipment, tools, and vocabulary that just come with the job. Sometimes, it can be difficult when industry professionals use terms you're not familiar with– especially when it has to do with your own property! If you've heard the term "yoke vent" from your plumber and are wondering what they're talking about, City Plumbing and Rooter is here to help!

What Is a Yoke Vent in Plumbing?

A yoke vent is a type of plumbing vent used in drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems. The purpose of a plumbing vent is to allow air into the drain pipes to prevent vacuum effects that can reduce or stop the flow of wastewater. A yoke vent specifically is a T-shaped fitting that connects two drain pipes to a shared vent pipe. The "yoke" shape allows a single vent pipe to provide air to two drain lines, which can save space and materials compared to using two separate vent pipes.

When Are Yoke Vents Used?

Yoke vents are commonly used when two fixtures, like two toilets or two sinks, are located near each other and can share a single vent. They must be properly sized to handle the combined flow from both drain lines and must be pitched in the correct direction to allow condensation and any drain residue to drain out of the vent. Like other vents, yoke vents must extend up through the roof of a building to open air to function properly.

Is a Yoke Vent Right for My Needs?

Yoke vents are one option for providing necessary airflow to drain lines in a plumbing system. For larger or more complex systems, a main vent stack may be more appropriate to handle the greater volume of air needed. But for smaller groups of nearby fixtures, a yoke vent can be an efficient and cost-effective venting solution. If you're planning plumbing for a bathroom with two sinks or toilets, a yoke vent could be a good option to consider with the help of a licensed plumber.
