Hydro Jetting vs Snaking: What's the Difference and Which Is Best?

October 1, 2022

Clogged drains aren't always easy to fix, especially without professional help. Drain clogs that are caused by tree roots, buildup of heavy grease or sludge, hard scale accumulation, often require a more intense solution. To remove a clog, your plumbing expert may incorporate a technique called hydro jetting or they may use a drain snake to remove the clog.

What Is Hydro Jetting?

This process involves the use of high-pressure water to clean the inside of your pipes. Hydro jetting descales pipes, removes clogs due to grease buildup, and can even eliminate roots. It's often used to clear clogs in kitchen and sewer lines.

  • Water is pressurized to 1,500 and 4,000 PSI which can effectively scour the insides of pipelines.
  • Special nozzles are used to accommodate specific clog types and pipe sizes.
  • During the process, water is directed in such a way to direct it into the drain.

What Is Drain Snaking?

A drain snake is a tool that plumbing professionals and homeowners alike can use for drain cleaning. Also known as a drain auger, a drain snake is a metal cable coiled into a case. The cable may be as long as 25 feet and ends in a corkscrew spring.

  • The cable is inserted into the drain and is uncoiled and manually pushed into the drain.
  • Once the end meets with the resistance of a clog, it grabs and holds the material.
  • The snake can then be retrieved with the clogging material attached.

Is Hydro Jetting or Snaking the Best Technique?

The option that's best for removing clogs in drains depends upon the drain, what's causing the clog, and where it is. However, the general rule of thumb is that snaking drains works well for clogs that aren't too deep. Hydro jetting is beneficial for heavy grease and sludge as well as larger roots.
