Why Does Your Toilet Keep Getting Clogged?

December 15, 2022

The occasional clogged toilet happens to all of us, and in most cases we can easily pinpoint the source of the clog. Unfortunately for some, a clogged toilet can become a frequent recurring issue, with no clear cause in sight. At City Plumbing and Rooter, we're skilled at honing in on the root of the problem, and we're here to help you keep those clogs at bay.

What Causes Recurring Clogs?

There are a variety of reasons for recurring clogs, some more obvious than others. They include:

  • Incorrect toilet paper usage. This is the most common culprit behind recurring clogs. If you’re flushing too much toilet paper at once, or if the toilet paper is too thick, it can cause a backup in your plumbing system. Ultimately, this leads to slow draining—and eventually may lead to a full-on clog.
  • Tree roots. If there are any trees near your home, they may be growing roots that are slowly infiltrating your plumbing system. Trees with thirsty root systems often spread out far and wide in search of water, which can damage or clog pipes.
  • Calcium deposits. Calcium deposits can build up over time and cause clogs, especially in older pipes. Hard water is the usual culprit behind calcium buildup, as it’s high in mineral content.

Stopping Recurring Toilet Clogs

If you’re noticing frequent toilet clogs, there are a few things you can do to help reduce them. Try the following to see if you can keep those clogs from returning:

  • Use only septic-safe toilet paper. Regular toilet paper can be too thick, so look for a septic-safe version that breaks down more quickly in water.
  • Flush only the necessary waste and toilet paper. This includes no sanitary products, baby wipes, papertowel, or other objects that don’t belong in the toilet!
  • Have your pipes inspected and cleaned. If you suspect tree roots are causing a clog or if your pipes are very old, having them inspected and professionally cleaned can help reduce recurring clogs.
  • Install a water softener system. Hard water is often the source of calcium buildup, so installing a water softener can help to prevent this from occurring in the future.
