How to Fix Hair-Clogged Drains and Keep Them Clear

October 22, 2022

There's nothing quite as frustrating as a clogged drain, especially when you're in a hurry to get ready for the day. As you take a shower, the water gets ankle deep, or the sink fills up before you shave or brush your teeth. Most issues like this are the result of hair-clogged drains, but there are things you can do to clear the drain and keep it open.

Signs of Hair-Clogged Drains

The first sign of drain clog is that the sink or tub starts to take longer to drain as the hair slowly accumulates and closes the drain. If the hair isn't removed from the drain, it won't allow the water to drain at all. This is common in the shower, but sinks can also get a hair clog.

How to Keep Hair Out of Your Drains

There are three basic tips you can follow to keep hair from clogging up your drains:

  1. Brush your hair before showering.
  2. Use a hair catcher in the drain to collect any hair that you do lose in the shower.
  3. Clean your drains with boiling water once a month to keep them clean.

When to Get Professional Help for Hair Clogs

If you can see the hair in the drain opening, it may be possible for you to pull it out to open the drain. If not, try a plunger to remove the clog. If you're still not able to clear the drain, it's best to call a plumbing professional for drain cleaning services.
